The Independence Calculator performs simple arithmetic on figures you supply. It divides your liquid position by your monthly cost of living, and it divides your annual cost of living by a four percent withdrawal rate.
Four percent is a widely used planning convention, not a guarantee and not a promise of any return. The calculation deliberately ignores taxation, inflation, investment risk, market conditions, currency movement, your health, your pension entitlements, and every other fact of your particular life. Its output is a rough position, not a plan, and it should never be relied on as the basis for a financial decision.
Reasonable care is taken with everything published here, but no warranty is given that any of it is accurate, complete, or current, and figures used as examples are illustrative. You use this site and its calculator at your own risk.
